One spoiled day – Don’t ever start out in the afternoon!

August 11th, 2011 6 comments

By leaving Cihan’s place in the afternoon we made a mistake.  No, we didn’t leave anything behind, the mistake was leaving around 2pm to cover a section 73km long, which was also not exactly flat. Read more…

Traveling further in the lands of Kurds as far as Kulu

August 8th, 2011 5 comments

We didn’t rise early in Tepekoly since we went to a wedding the evening before. We had such wonderful experiences that we didn’t mind our late start that morning. Sahaps invited us for breakfast. Again we sat around the large serving tray, ate and had a good conversation. When we get home, we will buy such a large, wooden tray and adopt this Kurdish custom including the tea drinking.

While packing I noticed that one of the spokes in Zita’s rear wheel is broken, we even had to take the  Rohloff gears apart a bit.  This took quite a lot of time, it was well after 10am (with a lot of heat) by the time I finished.

The truckdriver’s hospitality in Sivrihisar

August 1st, 2011 11 comments

We left  Cüney quite early, as we managed to pack the night before. One of our host’s colleagues was waiting for him outside the house when we were saying our goodbyes. He left for work and we went on our way.001-turkey-sivrihisar

After Eskisehir the countryside became really strange, one that we have never seen before. It was empty, only fields around us, and nothing else. We were going into the big nothing by the four lanes of the road, using the hard shoulder.

Yesterday afternoon we left Ali’s home.

The farewell was incredible.  We stayed at Ali almost one week and we liked each other a lot.

But the biggest farewell was from Dani. We travelled together more than 1 month and now he just left.

One week in Istanbul – Part 2

July 20th, 2011 8 comments

We had two favourite foods in Istanbul: lahmacun, a thin crust pastry with red meat and spice sauce, which you get a bit of vegetable with. You can pile the veg on top of it and then roll it up and eat it.

Find our home in Istanbul – not easy…

Arriving to Istanbul was not that hard that we thought. The traffic is acceptable, the only thing you need is to flow with others. This is the key element of driving in Asia I can say. So do not be bothered by nothing, even if you see a burning car.
(watch your video about arriving to Istanbul here!)

Farewell from Ali

We left Edirne in the morning. Ali joined us for the first 25kms before we stopped in a village for a tea.

The locals were sitting at the tables, were playing cards and drinking tea. It was half lira so we had some too and also bought a large box of ice cream for 3 liras. During the break we cleaned the chains cause it was due despite they were still in working order. We said good bye form Ali, we had a good time with him, it was a nice change before three of us hit the road again.

The road was still undulating; we planned to go till Kirklareli, 60kms from Edirne, but the hills tired us out so we arrived there only in dinner time. Zita and Dani went shopping to the local BIM while I looked after the bikes. Read more…
